Castor oil for hair growth and thickness – Does it really help?

Castor oil has been hailed by many as nature’s gift to man for hair, skin, body and nails. However, the main question we get here at Lizzy’s Naturals is how to use castor oil for hair growth and thickness or a variation of the same question. It could be re-growth, hair darkening, but it remains a question of hair health. We have even received questions about castor oil for hair side effects.

Our policy here at Lizzy’s Naturals is that whatever is important to our reader is important to us. I will share my own experience with castor oil on my hair and hope the readers will get great benefits from it like I did.

Hair grows naturally in every individual when the conditions are right. For hair to grow well, one must be eating a healthy diet and also taking care of their scalp. Dry or very oily scalp will discourage hair growth, and sometimes make one lose hair faster than their follicles are growing hair. It is popular to use castor oil for natural hair though I believe even those with chemically treated hair can help their scalp by using it.

What is castor oil?

Castor oil is a clear, thick and colourless extract from the beans of the castor plant which grows in many fields even locally. The seeds are pressed to extract the oil. It has been found to contain important minerals and fatty acids that help to maintain healthy skin hair.  Castor oil has Vitamin E, proteins and minerals as well as antifungal and antibacterial properties. This is why it is the most widely used oil used for hair, skin, nails and digestion.

In olden days, castor oil was popular as a laxative, and it can still be used now. However, ingesting too much of it can cause dehydration and death.  It has also been applied to hasten or induce labour in pregnant women, though doctors are now against this.

How to use castor oil for hair loss

Hair loss is an uncomfortable situation especially when it happens in the early 30’s. Women particularly fond it unnerving and will do anything to reverse hair loss. Castor oil should be combined with sesame oil for better and faster results. As we age, the body stops responding to diet in the same way it did when we were younger. To maintain a healthy diet therefore requires one to be intentional about it, and ensure you are eating the right foods. Moreover, the skin does not produce as much sebum as it did in the past, and oil is required in a higher amount than it did before.

Hair loss indicates thinning or death of hair follicles. If one notices hair loss, they should act quickly to reclaim their hair and make their follicles healthy again before they die off completely. Add other stimulative oils such as sesame or olive oil into your hair care routine and be consistent until you get results. Since castor oil is very thick, it must be mixed with lighter oil for easier application. To get results, repeat application at least thrice in a week

Jamaican Black Castor oil has been hailed as the best castor oil for hair growth and thickness but others are happy with any form of castor oil.  Castor oil can be found at any local health store in your area. You can also buy castor oil from Amazon or Ebay

Why is castor oil good for hair?

As a beauty product, castor oil contains many minerals and fatty acids essential for strong hair. Castor oil has been said to be a gift for the hair, skin and general health over the ages because of its awesome benefits. Its popularity dates back to the ancient Egyptian civilization which is also credited with discovering many of the beauty and health products.

Castor oil is viscous, and this makes it an effective sealant. It is heavy enough to hold down hair and ensure the moisture is locked in. Castor oil is affordable regardless of ones economic status, as it is widely available worldwide.

Castor oil for hair growth before and after

TheCastor Oil challenge takes place over a period of 8 weeks during which one measures the efficacy of the castor oil. One of the rules is to make sure that you are using castor oil at least three times a week on the scalp. It is not necessary to limit the use of other natural oils since castor oil; itself is not a moisturiser but a sealant.

Hair needs moisture and the best source of moisture is water. Therefore, in addition to other hair products, water should be applied daily onto the hair to replenish moisture. I advice people to mix water, olive oil, glycerine and vitamin E oil which can be lightly sprayed onto the hair daily (or twice a day). After a few days, massage your scalp with castor oil and put on a heat cap to allow the oil to penetrate. In addition, one should remember to take enough water as advised by health professionals.

The goal of the challenge is to use castor oil for hair growth and thickness and keep track of the hair growth within a period of 8 weeks. It is also expected that by the end of 8 weeks, you will have developed a healthy regimen and care routine for use on your hair.

Castor Oil has been found to have awesome rejuvenating properties that can aid the growth of hair when used regularly and consistently. It improves the circulation on the scalp thus making nutrients to be available for hair. This is important for stimulating growth of hair.
